The winners of the Clarence Derwent Awards this year were announced at the beginning of the month at the Duke of York's Theatre. Sheila Hancock won Best Supporting Actress on a British stage for her performance as Fraulein Schneider and Geoffrey Hutchings for Best Supporting Actor as her suitor, Herr Schultz, in the West End revival of Cabaret.

The judges for the award, which was founded by London-born actor, director and manager Clarence Derwent, who went on to become President of American Equity (1946 - 1952), were director Richard Digby Day, producer Thelma Holt and theatre critics Benedict Nightingale, Michael Billington and Irving Wardle.

Clarence Derwent (1884 -1959), whose stage credits included playing opposite Tallulah Bankhead in The Eagle Has Two Heads (1947) and Aline MacMahon in The Madwoman of Chaillot (1950), was a great advocate of supporting performers. He originally designated in his will the founding of an award for the best supporting performances on Broadway but then decided that the "amount of fun one can have from one's money when underground is strictly limitedů". The awards were thus instigated in 1945, thirteen years before he died, and have also included British performances.
