Quote | FANNY KEMBLE'S DEBUT

"Well, my dear, they can't say we have brought you out to exhibit your beauty."

Fanny Kemble's mother on her daughter's debut as Juliet. Miss Kemble [1809 - 1893] was not known for her looks though she could, as Constance Wright says in her book, Fanny Kemble and the Lovely Land, published by Robert Hale in 1974, suggest great beauty on stage. Short, somewhat stout and possessing a face marked by smallpox, she could give 'the illusion of loveliness, of fragility, and even, if necessary, of heroic stature'.
