Stand-up comic Jason Manford hosted the ceremony for the Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards at the Midland Hotel on 4 December. The healthy recognition of smaller spaces and companies continues. Jimmy Foster, accepting the Alpha Award 5,000 for Studio Salford said, "I can't tell you how much this means. We've got no money I can't wait to tell them all we've won this they will be absolutely over the moon."

This is the centenary year for repertory theatre, instigated by Annie Horniman in the Midland in 1907. The Horniman Award was fittingly won by Caroline Clegg who has followed closely in Horniman's footsteps with an 'outstanding contribution to live theatre' with Feelgood and her newly-launched rep at Heaton Park.
