Theatre Review | UNDER THE BLUE SKY | Duke of York's Theatre
Six people in three relationships battle out their emotions in this three scene play. They are all teachers and although the education system is the flimsy premise underpinning the play, Under The Blue Sky is really about the intricate balance and thrust and wince of relationships. Theatre Review | HARD HEARTED HANNAH & Other Stories | Cartoon de Salvo @ Lyric Hammersmith Studio [end of tour]
Improvised theatre is a very canny beast. Nothing too conclusive can be said about an improv play because by tomorrow it will have morphed into something different. However if a show is rip-roaringly brilliant, most likely the brilliant version will be taken as the norm. Thought for the Day | NEVER SO GOOD | A Dissenting View
After reading Evie Rackham's notice of Never So Good on Rogues & Vagabonds, along with a lot of the press comment in the past fortnight, I'm wondering whether paying your own money to see a show sharpens the critical faculties. For me, Howard Davies' epic staging unarguably misses its mark, and very few of the superlatives lavished on it would have found their way into any review I'd written; although I would immediately concede that, in sheer production terms, the National has done a flawed play more than proud. I can honestly say I have never been welcomed into a theatre space before by a member of staff greeting me with a 'may I hand you your tabard to wear during the show'. I like a start like this, the mix of excitement and trepidation that perhaps there is going to be audience participation or something else untoward and tantalising, with everyone sitting on the uncomfy Jerwood Upstairs benches feeling equally foolish and dowdy in their Wal-Mart, institution-blue tabard with yellow smiley face on the back. The view is slightly disconcerting as I settle onto my decently comfy seat: there's dry ice billowing; there are russet autumn leaves, and there's a picnic table. How peculiar, then, that They Have Oak Trees In North Carolina (oh my, that doesn't trip off the tongue with ease) is set indoors, and the picnic table nestling amongst trees and leaves and dry ice is actually meant to be a kitchen table. There are many verifiable facts in Casanova's life and he met some of the most influential movers and shakers of the age, but the claims of his sexual prowess and appetite are unverifiable and come from his mouth alone.
