Theatre Review | THE UGLY ONE | Royal Court Theatre: Jerwood Theatre Downstairs
“Your face is unacceptable.” Such are the words spoken by Lette’s boss Scheffler when Lette asks why he cannot present his own invention at a company conference. “No-one’s ever told you?” he continues – “You can’t sell anything with that face.” Harriet Davis [more]

Theatre Review | MANY ROADS TO PARADISE | Finborough Theatre
Look, I’m just going to get this over with. No frills, no bells and whistles, no excuses. This play is, well, there’s no other way to say it – EXCELLENT! Julienne Bannister [more]

Theatre Review | DICKENS UNPLUGGED | The Reduced Shakespeare Company @ Comedy Theatre [transfer]
I gaze at the multitude of items – hats, clothing, musical instruments, tin baths, wooden stools and tailors dummies that doubles as gruesome torsos, all suspended from on high with rope. Bathed in the reddish glow of flickering Victorian candlelight, the set, though macabre, has a comical air and the title Hammer House of Curiosity springs to mind. There's a light-hearted jazz soundtrack and the upright piano against the back wall is bedecked with candelabra straight from Miss Haversham’s wedding table. Julienne Bannister [more]

Theatre Review | ...SISTERS | Gate Theatre, Notting Hill
In the spirit of Headlong Theatre’s experimental dabbling in Chekhov’s Three Sisters at the Gate, this piece of writing is not so much a review as a random formulation of words produced in tribute to the evanescent quality of theatre. Who knows what I will write as my fingers hover over the keyboard, my deep respect for both Chekhov and Headlong fuelling my creative impulse to live in the moment: %@37g#! Hmm. Theatre Review | OXFORD STREET | Royal Court @ Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre [transfer]
The atmosphere is hot and steamy. Faces peer in from behind glass. Outside, voices are raised. A fracas is beginning. A group of youths yell and confront each other. Ahead of us shop assistants are bantering, joshing, hustling. Which is the ‘fake’, which ‘reality’? Carole Woddis [more]

Theatre Review | LOVE - THE MUSICAL | Lyric Hammersmith
Originally an Icelandic production by Vesturport, the team that brought us the excellent Metamorphosis at the Lyric, Love – The Musical is one of the most unusual plays you will ever see. It really has some originality to it. But not in a flashy, trampling-boundaries-in-its-wake way; with a quiet ‘ever thought about this?’ Rhys Williams [more]

Theatre Review | LONDON ASSURANCE | Richmond Theatre [tour]
Dion Boucicault supposedly wrote London Assurance – his debut play – when he was only 20 years old. The original manuscript took a mere 30 days, and he later admitted to doubts about the quality of the finished product. These doubts were well founded. Harriet Davis [more]

Theatre Review | THE CHALK GARDEN | Donmar Warehouse
With filmic attention to minute detail, the Donmar has been transformed into the dishevelled garden room of a 1950s Sussex manor house. Rain-stained windows shed their English country light over fading books and furniture. Kevin Quarmby [more]

Theatre Review | THE REVENGER'S TRAGEDY | NT Olivier Theatre
The Olivier space at the National Theatre is blessed with a vast revolving stage which, although used effectively enough, has rarely been used as the central focus of a production's design. Not until now, that is. Kevin Quarmby [more]

Theatre Review | FAT PIG | Trafalgar Studio 1
Neil LaBute's new comedy is about a man who is ashamed of going out with a fat girl because he believes that everybody will look down on him. He is right; everybody does look down on him. End of relationship. End of play. There are a lot of fat jokes, but it seems ok to begin with because the fat girl is so well adjusted and lovely and everybody else is either weak or spiteful or both. With its jaunty dialogue and likeable TV comedy performers, I would suggest that it is a TV script that has lost its way and found itself in a theatre. Claire Ingrams [more]
