While Greta Scacchi is touring England in Rattigan's The Deep Blue Sea and Brenda Blethyn will be opening at Manchester Royal Exchange in Williams' The Glass Menagerie, the Gate Theatre in Dublin has a production of the Rattigan opening on 15 April, with previews from 10 April, and The Glass Menagerie with Francesca Annis in the lead is running until 5 April. Directed by Robin Lefèvre, it has received some glowing reviews – 'Succeeds in capturing the ethereal beauty of Williams' finest play Irish Times; 'Annis is terrifyingly effective' Sunday Independent. The shocking news that the writer and director Anthony Minghella has died at the age of 54 came through at around 1.30pm today. It has been reported that he died of a brain haemorrhage at London's Charing Cross Hospital at 5am this morning, following complications from a routine operation on his neck. [more]
